Croatian Mate Pavic pulled off a major upset in the
the Unicef Open at when he stunned Dutch world number 40 Robin Haase
with a 6-4 7-6 (7-2) win.
18-year-old Pavic, ranked 640th in the
world and playing just his second main tour event, seized the only break
point chance in the first set and kept his nerve in the second set
tie-break to complete his famous win.There were no such problems for Austrian third seed Jurgen Melzer, who beat Russia's Igor Kunitsyn 6-1 6-1, and other winners were Olivier Rochus, Leonardo Mayer, Tatsuma Ito, Benoitr Paire, Philipp Petzschner, Alejandro Falla and Paolo Lorenzi.
The women's event saw two major shocks with top seed Sam Stosur surprised 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 by Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens, and French Open finalist Sara Errani going down 5-7 6-3 6-4 to Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.
Fifth seed Maria Kirilenko was another casualty, losing 6-4 3-6 7-5 to Italy's Francesca Schiavone, but Dominika Cibulkova and Roberta Vinci - the third and sixth seeds respectively - both progressed.
Other winners were eighth seed Nadia Petrova, who beat local wild card Kiki Bertens 6-2 6-4,.Shahar Peer, Arantxa Rus, Urszula Radwanska, and Romanian pair Monica Niculescu and Irina Begu.
