Top seed David Ferrer made it through to the second
round of the Unicef Open on Tuesday with a straight forward 6-4 6-4 win
over qualifier Pierre-Ludovic Duclos.
Ferrer took just over one
and a half hours to dispatch the Canadian world number 244, breaking his
opponent once in the first set and twice more in the second despite
being broken once himself. However, it was a poor day for second seed Serbian Viktor Troicki as he was dumped out 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 by Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse, who did not face a single break point in the course of his 70-minute victory.
Seventh seed Alex Bogomolov Jr also went out after losing 6-4 6-4 to Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, but there were wins for eighth seed Lukasz Kubot of Poland, and Italian Flavio Cipolla.
In the women's second round, unseeded Kim Clijsters breezed past Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko, while there were also victories for third seed Dominika Cibulkova, eighth seed Nadia Petrova and qualifier Urszula Radwanska.
In two outstanding first round games, Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson surprised seventh seed Jelena Jankovic 6-2 3-6 6-4, and Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova knocked out Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 6-1 6-2.
